Hell vs. Omnipresence

So I was sitting in church last weekend and the pastor was talking about hell. He made the comment that God is not present in hell which totally threw me for a loop. Isn't God everywhere? Isn't this the idea behind God being 'omni-present'? If God is everywhere how can there be a place where He is not?

I have asked a few friends what their opinions on the issue are, so I'd like to see what you think about this? How do we deal with the conflict between a God that is everywhere, and hell as a place where God is not?

Please leave a comment.

Isn't Hell, by definition, a place or situation that is void of God/God's will?

I guess that's kinda what I'm asking. If we define God as everywhere, then how can there be a place where God isn't?

here's where i come down on this... hell is the place where God's presence is withheld. This does not necessarily conflict with His omnipresence, just as His submission to death doesn't conflict with His omnipotence. What do you think?
